Shield Cup Congo Boys Match Report

Jeffrey Tikolo’s clinical finish in the first half gave us a hard fought win against Congo Boys in Mombasa in our first game in this year’s FKF Betway Cup tournament.

The goal came in the early exchanges after great work in the middle of the park by our midfield magicians, with a great assist by Walt. Jeffo took it in stride, beat the last defender at pace and calmly slotted it past the opponent’s keeper.

Musa was in goal with Adet, Makori, Ihaji and Lefty Onsando in defence. Our midfield engine was marshaled by Godi, Kangi and Walt. Jeffo, Kasee and Byron were the firepower upfront. Keegan, Atuulo, Kolongo, Shem, Olii, Frank and Justo started on the bench.

We started on a high with our midfield trio stringing passes well while Kasee and Byg were being a constant menace on the flanks. Jeffo seemed a threat every time the ball was at his feet with his slow run then constant burst always catching the opponents by surprise. Ihaji and and Lefty were up to the task as well; the ‘intelligence’ on the match was that the opponents had great wing players. We managed to handle the threat well reducing their wing play to long crosses from their own half. Walt had several shots at goal but was well saved. Lefty went on one of his power run down the left flank but his final low cross was well saved by the keeper to deny our attack a simple tap in. Jeffo had another chance but his cross was equally saved.

We went into the second half a goal up and at this point suffering physically because of the harsh Mombasa weather. But our defense stood strong, our keeper majestic. With no room to create from the middle, the opponents resulted to lumping hopeful balls into our 18 area. All were met with aplomb by our central pairing of Makori and Adet. Shots from far all ended into the safest hands on the day, Musa. Shem came in for Byron, Olii for Kasee and Frank for Kangi.

The ref astonishingly plucked more than 10 minutes from the blues as added time. Had he added 20, the opponents would still not have gotten an equalizer.

Next team in the Cup, Premier League’s Posta Rangers.
